A fabulous gentleman's 18-carat gold Patek Philippe Calatrava strap watch (pictured) has sold for £10,000 at our recent Jewellery, Watches & Silver Sale.
This family-owned Genevan watch manufacturer has been around since 1839 and is widely considered one of the world's most prestigious watch manufacturers. Notable owners and patrons have included Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela and Leo Tolstoy.
The company also dominates the record books. Four of the top five most expensive watches ever sold at auction are Patek Philippe timepieces, including the number one slot held by a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300A-010, which reached an eye-watering $31million in 2019.
“Sales in this specialism are booming at the moment, and the market is very buoyant with watches now firmly established as a mainstream core collectable,” said Nick Bassett. He heads up the watches department at Elstob & Elstob.
“We are seeing leading brands such as Rolex, Omega and Cartier doing extremely well, so please get in touch if you consider consigning an item. We offer free expert valuations and great exposure in the global marketplace should you wish to sell,” he added.
Other lots to achieve excellent results at this auction were a fine George III silver soup tureen that sold for £9,500; a pair of striking ruby and star brooches that reached £4,000; and a late 19th-century sapphire and diamond brooch pendant that went for £3,600.
Our next Jewellery, Watches & Silver Sale will take place on Friday, 16 December, with the last date for consignments being Friday, 25 November.
