We are delighted to launch our first specialist sale dedicated to historical and contemporary Asian art forms, exclusively online until Sunday, 5 March.
The sale showcases bronze figures, ceramics, jades, textiles, books, scrolls, weaponry, jewellery and objets d'art.
As Asia becomes ever more important on the world’s stage, there has been an increased interest and fascination with its diverse cultures and rich history. This has led to a significant rise in buying and selling Asian art, whether ancient or modern.
At our auctions, we have seen increased sales and rising prices with bidding from the UK, Europe, and globally.
One of the lots to look out for is a large Chinese Famille Verte basin that was possibly manufactured for the Japanese market. With a diameter of 64cm, it is attractively decorated with a jardinière of flowers in the centre, surrounded by birds in flight and a flowering vine. It carries a guide price of £2,000 to £3,000.
Another eye-catching lot is a Japanese Samurai tanto. These short swords were worn by the Samurai class of feudal Japan and initially dated from the Heian period. They were mainly used as a weapon for piercing or stabbing but have evolved in design over the years to become more ornate. This example has a brass hilt and scabbard and is ornately decorated with copper and white metal with details of figures, foliage and a frog. It is valued at £100 to £150.
All the lots are illustrated and described in the online catalogue. Anyone wishing to discuss the pieces in more detail or request a condition report can get in touch with the auction house by calling 01765 699200 or emailing info@elstob.co.uk
