A CHINESE CARVED WOOD HORN-SHAPED BOAT

of cornucopia form modelled as a hewn raft carved with a bearded recumbent portulent figure by a pine tree to the neck and reticulated mouth, the centre with hollowed-out aperture, the tail modelled with Jin Chan the three-legged money toad, the vessel riding on a bed of waves with carved fish and lotus leaf, the base with a carved four-character seal mark, the polished horn of honey brown colour deepening in areas to rich reddish amber tones, probably Qing dynasty. 31cm long

The Jin Chan is a legendary animal of the Han people. The money toad is associated with the Daoist monk, Liu Haichan, as the xianren's animal companion.
