The Rev John Clubbe was the vicar of the parish of Whatfield in Suffolk and a satirical writer. He was a close friend of the artist Thomas Gainsborough, who painted his portrait twice. The present work was offered as 'Circle of Gainsborough' at Sotheby's on 31st May 1995 (lot 254)
